The Elevator Pitch

I think more about the elevator pitch these days, partly because of my networking group but mostly since I am working on developing a SaaS medical platform with my partner and our coach is drilling the importance of refining our message, in all forms.

So when I got a call one Saturday morning around 10:30am from an unknown gentleman I was concentrating more on my driving then his message which rambled.. I forgot his name but he launched into his pitch, I came across you on Media-Match and I am a camera operator/editor and developing or have developed a multi-cultural dance program. This is where he wandered off the road and started asking me about ipTVe, how long I've been in the business and if I've gotten rich yet? I was getting frustrated and a little annoyed so I asked his some questions such as, why did you call and what are you interested in discussing?

After about three minutes in total with the call going nowhere fast he said, "well I am not going to take anymore of your time" but before I could make any suggestions the call dropped and that was that.

It got me thinking about how indirect and badly this person presented his idea and the pitch to me - not that I'd ever call someone I don't know at 10:30am on a weekend.

So how many other media creatives have little clue on the importance of the first few seconds of a cold call? How would you pitch an idea and when would you do it and not do it?
