8e6 Technologies Introduces Quota and Time-Based Internet Filtering to Manage Olympics-Related Streaming Media

8e6_logo.gif

London, U.K. - July 29, 2008 - 8e6 Technologies, an Internet security and insider threat management provider, today announced the release of the 8e6 R3000 Internet Filter version 2.1, the latest upgrade to the company's flagship filtering solution. The major upgrade features expansions to the filter's Safe Search function adding support to Ask.com and the AOL search engine. Additionally, the release includes increased administration capabilities and introduces several new filtering controls that will aid IT managers in time for the highly Web-accessible Beijing Olympics.

For the first time in the United States, Olympic enthusiasts will be able to access live streaming coverage of the Summer Games as it happens. During the Games' 17-day run, NBCOlympics.com plans to offer 2,200 hours of live streaming video and a total of more than 3,500 hours of exclusive on-demand video. IT managers can expect both a surge of interest in following the games online and unregulated access that could trigger network bandwidth overloads and loss of productivity. While IT administrators may attempt to completely block access to any types of streaming media during this time, total restriction may encourage many to bypass the network filter altogether via Web-based proxies.

"Every organization should be able to appropriate their filter to fit the culture of their company and Acceptable Use Policy," said Eric Lundbohm, vice president of marketing at 8e6 Technologies. "We aim to provide not only a best-of-breed filtering solution but the highest quality user experience, and this release focuses on usability for our customers and smart expansions to popular features. Administrators can now control their Internet Security Policies, and provide real-time and detailed forensic reporting on the enforcement of those policies using 8e6 Professional Edition."

The 8e6 R3000 v2.1 now offers filtering based on new criteria such as enhanced quota, calendar and an expanded time-based function; adding additional layers of control that will help manage the network during daytime sporting events such as the Olympics and March Madness. During the Olympics, administrators may want to allow 30 minutes of access a day to the streamed events, which allows employees to follow the games but also enforces responsible network use.

With quota-based filtering, administrators can choose specific categories like "Sports," "Streaming Media," or "Shopping" and set user or group quotas to allow as much or as little access to these categories, or any combination of categories, as deemed appropriate. Additionally, IT administrators can utilize time and calendar-based filtering to regulate Internet access by time of the day then apply time profiles to calendar days. For example, administrators can choose to allow access to sites during the lunch hour, or ease up on Web access restrictions after regular work hours.

CDNetworks and Octoshape Partner for Live Hybrid Peer-to-Peer Streaming to Millions of Concurrent Users

cdn_networks_logo.gif

San Jose, CA - July 24, 2008 - CDNetworks (KOSDAQ: 073710), a top-three global, full-service content delivery network (CDN), and Octoshape, a leading provider of high-quality streaming solutions, have joined forces to deliver affordable live streaming for millions of concurrent viewers. The hybrid peer-to-peer solution, resulting from the integration of CDNetworks' enterprise network and Octoshape's peer platform, is the first solution of its kind that is commercially available and tested for internet broadcasting of large scale events.

Available immediately, the CDNetworks Media Live Streaming service enables massively scalable live audio and video streaming that ensures high-quality end-user experiences while significantly cutting costs for the broadcasters and content owners. The combined Octoshape and CDNetworks solution takes streaming to a new level, providing a serious alternative to traditional large-scale broadcasting.

CDNetworks Media Live Streaming service enables an unprecedented level of scalability and quality for real-time delivery of large-scale live events, such as concerts, sporting events, news casts, and other events in which hundreds of thousands to millions of viewers are expected to attend. Until this partnership, distributing content reliably, and especially live content, to an audience that is located around the world and is connected by Internet broadcast media would have been technically and financially untenable. CDNetworks Media Live Streaming makes distributing content, such as live streaming on a large scale, affordable (in-line with traditional television broadcast) while benefiting media service providers including TV broadcasters, CATV, and IPTV.

The superior performance and stability of Media Live Streaming is a well-known fact among leading European broadcasters, including DW-TW, a German news channel, and RTP, a major Portuguese broadcasting station. For years now, Octoshape's leading edge streaming services have powered the high-quality international webcast of the pan-European music event "Eurovision Song Contest" reaching millions of viewers.

Media Live Streaming service uses Octoshape's powerful state-of-the-art hybrid peer-to-peer transport technology. The service secures optimal transmission routes by utilizing a special communication protocol to ensure smooth transmission in diverse user network environments. Media Live Streaming also uses a high-quality transport mechanism that eliminates buffering and enables stable transmission of high-quality content even over great network distances.

"We are very excited about the partnership with Octoshape that has resulted in the new CDNetworks Media Live Streaming service," said Sangwoo Park, Executive Vice President of Marketing at CDNetworks. "This combined technologically advanced platform delivers unparalleled user experience and economies that provide new market opportunities for our existing and future customers. It allows them to affordably deliver live broadcasts over the Internet to a virtually unlimited number of live concurrent users."

NextIO and Broadcast International Team for HD Video Demo at IPTV North America

NextIO_logo.gif

NextIO, the leader in virtualized I/O solutions, and Broadcast International (BCST) ("BI"), the leader in low-bandwidth video compression software, today announced that they will team to showcase a breakthrough HD video demonstration at the IPTV North America show in Chicago, July 22nd and 23rd (BI booth #16).

The demonstration -- which utilizes NextIO's ExpressConnect solution and BI's ultra-high speed video compression technology, running on the IBM BladeCenter® QS21 server -- will feature real-time video encoding at under 3Mbps. This is compared to the MPEG 2 standard of 19.4 Mbps at which most HD video is transmitted, and will enable video providers to pack more HD video onto limited bandwidth.

The NextIO technology solves one of the most important challenges encountered by high-speed HD video transmission -- limited and limiting I/O throughput. The ultra-high speed connections provided by the Next/I/O's PCI Express-based ExpressConnect solutions allow maximum and scalable data flow to the system, commensurate with the processing power of the IBM BladeCenter environment. This input speed, combined with the unrivaled power of the underlying CPU technology, enables BI's CodecSys® video compression software to deliver encoded HD video in real-time at breakthrough rates, under 3 Mbps.

The combined technologies promise to change the video distribution world by making it possible for cable, satellite or IPTV providers to deliver live HDTV at compression levels four to six times higher than is currently possible. Conservation of limited bandwidth resources has become a critical requirement in the broadcast, cable, satellite, mobile and IPTV markets, especially as bandwidth-intensive, high-definition video becomes the industry standard.

According to Chris Pettey, NextIO CTO and co-founder, "This is the first time customers can take advantage of the full density of blade solutions with standard PCIe I/O cards in order to produce streaming live, HD video. We are pleased to be part of this industry-revolutionizing solution that will literally change the face of broadcast television."

Castfire Entrusts the Highwinds CDN with High-Profile

highwinds_logo.jpg

WINTER PARK, Fla. - July 16, 2008 - Highwinds Network Group, Inc., a multi-platform IP services and content distribution provider, today announced that Castfire, Inc., is leveraging Highwinds' high-performance content delivery network for the global distribution of its customers' rich media files. The new partnership is rooted in Castfire's commitment to delivering a best-of-breed, turnkey mediacasting solution, enabling its customers to efficiently create, store, manage and deliver branded episodic content, including audio and video files, to their target audiences. Many of Castfire's high-profile customers are already distributing content over the Highwinds CDN, including the Atlanta Falcons, Boing Boing TV, Themis Group, What's Your 2wenty, Channel Flip and KCET.

"We are able to get customers up-and-running quickly on the Highwinds CDN because they've made integration so simple," said Brian Walsh, founder of Castfire. "We've found their CDN to be highly extensive and reliable and it's easy for us to put customers on Highwinds' RollingThunderTM network, knowing that Highwinds goes that 'extra mile' in both their delivery and service."

Castfire and Highwinds have brought together leading technologies that enable customers to manage their content monetization strategies throughout each step of the process - from content creation and storage, to delivery and syndication, to reporting and analytics. The enterprise-class Castfire solution makes it easy to manage a large media library over its lifetime, and monetize and publish the library content across multiple platforms and devices. Content providers can also manage all business rules around multiple syndication partners, while tapping into Castfire's existing syndication relationships to push content to popular media sites. The Highwinds CDN extends Castfire's global web presence via RollingThunder, a network of strategically placed data centers, a massive peering partner roster, and nearly a Terabit per second of network capacity.

Highwinds and Castfire are also joining forces to deliver some of the best reporting tools in the industry. The Castfire platform was designed from the ground up to include analytical data, with reports embedded into the system. Detailed analytics display information about watched videos, syndication partner performance, etc., in customizable reports. Castfire is further enhancing their reporting capabilities by integrating raw log files from Highwinds' StrikeTracker(TM) media manager and reporting dashboard. These downloadable log files, reflecting the line-by-line activity of a server, are formatted according to industry standards and can be easily filtered on a per-customer basis. It opens doors for customers to receive detailed reporting and real-time analytics to make informed decisions on-the-fly about their content and campaigns. Castfire is one of the first companies to use this new feature in the recently released StrikeTracker 1.5.

The Broadband Forum: latest Broadband and IPTV statistics

logo-broadband-forum.gif

Hong Kong, 14 July 2008 - The Broadband Forum, formerly the DSL Forum, has today announced the latest Broadband and IPTV statistics at this year's Broadband World Forum Asia in Hong Kong. The report, prepared for the Broadband Forum by industry analysts Point Topic, shows that IPTV subscribers have more than doubled for the second year running with an increase of 53.14 percent in the 12 months to 31 March 2008.

The statistics also show that worldwide broadband subscribers have reached over 370 million with DSL remaining the most dominant access technology with 65 percent of the world's subscribers. However, fiber subscriptions have risen by 33 percent since the beginning of 2007, with over 10 million people connected to a fiber network. This increase in fiber subscriptions may be attributed to the increased popularity of bandwidth hungry services such as IPTV. However, the leading technology delivering IPTV today is ADSL2plus, with 12,049,817 subscribers.

Nearly 15.5 million people are now subscribed to an IPTV service, with Europe having over 8.4 million subscribers, making it the strongest market in terms of growth and total subscriber numbers.

broadband-forum-08_table.jpg

Source: Data provided for the Broadband Forum by Point Topic (www.point-topic.com)

"IPTV operators around the world have shown that systems are scalable and can handle rapid growth in subscriber numbers," said Point Topic Senior Analyst John Bosnell. "However, developing and agreeing standards will help these operators deliver IPTV more simply and effectively over a variety of access technologies and help to drive higher up take in other markets."

DSL Dominates

DSL continues to be the most popular access technology with close to 240 million of the world's subscribers. Cable subscriptions rates have slowed to 18 percent growth rate, while subscribers on FTTx rose 33 percent in the last year.

This increase in fiber subscribers is echoed in the current work of the Broadband Forum, which has expanded its remit over the past few years well beyond its DSL roots; first issuing access agnostic management specifications and most recently developing specifications to incorporate fiber into the standard architecture and management framework of providers. Most recently the Forum released Technical Report (TR)-142, "Framework for TR-069 enabled PON and fiber related devices". Building on its existing TR-069, TR-142 enables vendors and service providers to remotely configure, troubleshoot and manage a Passive Optical Network (PON) - an important consideration as vendors and service providers worldwide look to maximise revenues, lower management complexities, minimise truck roll and introduce new revenue generating services.

The aim is also to enable fiber networks to work side by side with existing infrastructures - and with 370 million broadband subscribers in the world using a variety of access technologies, this is imperative to the success of fiber and others that they share common standards wherever possible.

Snapshot of Regional Broadband Growth to 31st March 2008

broadband-forum-08_table2.jpg

For the second year running, Western Europe continues to lead the way with over 97 million broadband users. Averaging 30 percent growth, emerging markets such as Eastern Europe, Latin America and the Middle East and Africa, demonstrate the exceptional growth of broadband around the globe.

"This report shows that although DSL remains the key vehicle for delivering broadband associated services, alternative access technologies, such as fiber, are increasing their footprints and their requirements need to be considered in our work," said George Dobrowski, Chairman and President of the Broadband Forum. "The Broadband Forum recognises this and is working hard to make sure fiber is integrated seamlessly in to existing broadband architectures and management platforms worldwide."

Velocix acquires exclusive license of RawFlow Live Streaming P2P

velocix_logo.jpg

Velocix(tm) (www.velocix.com), provider of the worlds leading Digital
Asset Delivery Network, today announced that it has acquired an
exclusive license for RawFlow's P2P Streaming technology. Under the
terms of this agreement, Velocix now has sole responsibility for selling
and supporting RawFlow's Intelligent Content Delivery (ICD) solution.

Velocix will market ICD under the Velocix Live Streaming product family
brand, adding a Hybrid-P2P Live Streaming option to a service line-up
that already includes Live Video Streaming for Adobe Flash & Microsoft
Windows Media, and Live Audio Streaming.

All existing RawFlow ICD customer and reseller partner relationships
will migrate to Velocix, as will the healthy pipeline of new business
prospects already interested in this solution.

Live events, including news, sports and music concerts, present
significant online delivery challenges. Unlike on-demand services for
pre-recorded materials where viewing requests are spread over time, live
services result in concentrated demand from a potentially huge audience,
just for the duration of the event. As a consequence, event organizers
are often forced to compromise quality or limit audience sizes when
using conventional live streaming services.

Hybrid-P2P Streaming blends delivery of live streams from the Velocix
Network caches as well as sharing bandwidth from peers. Each participant
is not only watching or listening to the live broadcast but is
effectively relaying the signal to the other audience members (peers) at
the same time. This community distribution process is managed in
real-time by sophisticated control and routing algorithms hosted on the
Velocix Network, ensuring required service levels and an uninterrupted
experience for the entire audience.

The Velocix Network is designed to enable content owners, studios, and
broadcasters to deliver video and other large digital assets, such as
software, games and audio over the web, with unprecedented performance,
breakthrough economics and an asset delivery lifecycle management system
that provides content owners the control, analytics and reporting they
need to manage their asset libraries through the digital distribution
chain.

More companies join the push to deploy Interactive Personalised TV - new specifications imminent

openTVForum_logo.jpg

Efforts to accelerate the deployment of IPTV by combining the expertise of key telecom operators, consumer electronics manufacturers and network infrastructure providers in the Open IPTV Forum are gathering further momentum, and the first release of the specifications that will allow IPTV to develop into a mass market service is close to completion.

At its meeting at the headquarters of Telefónica in Madrid from 10-13 June, the Open IPTV Forum, the pan-industry initiative that was established to produce the end-to-end solution specification which will open up access to the interactive and personalised services offered by IPTV, significantly expanded its membership. These companies join the founding members - Ericsson, FT Group, Nokia Siemens Networks, Panasonic, Philips, Samsung, Sony and Telecom Italia - and many other major IPTV industry players from the communications and entertainment industries (www.openiptvforum.org/members.html), bringing to 37 the number of companies which are working together in the Forum.

Since April this year, 11 new members have been accepted:
Access Company
BeeTV
FastWeb
Digital Fountain
Intel
InterTrust Technology Corporation
Motorola
Opera Software
Thomson
Swisscom
ZyXEL

Yun Chao Hu, Chairman of the Forum, commented:
"These new members represent a wide range of interest and broaden the input to the Forum's activities both technically and geographically; they reinforce the Forum's presence in the USA, with four new member companies (Digital Fountain, Intel, InterTrust Technology Corporation and Motorola) and establish the Forum's presence in Taiwan (ZyXel).

"Work on the new specifications is progressing fast. The Forum has already produced the first version of a Service and Platform Requirements document and the first architecture specification. We are now working round the clock to meet our target of publishing Release 1 in September this year. Release 1 will solve the problem of fragmentation within the market by standardising an IPTV framework, enabling a 'plug and play' experience for the end-user and, by ensuring interoperability, will make IPTV independent of the technology behind it."

Over the coming months, the Forum will be exhibiting at some of the world's largest consumer entertainment industry events:
-IPTV World Forum North America - Chicago, US, 22-23 July
-IFA, the world's largest consumer electronics trade fair - Berlin, Germany,
29 August - 3 September
-MPEG Industry Forum - Amsterdam, The Netherlands, 11 September
-IBC, the major international event for all involved in the creation, management and delivery of content for the entertainment industry - Amsterdam, The Netherlands, 12-16 September.
