Sorenson Media Partners with Kulabyte to Create the Squeeze Live Cloud Encoding Platform

Image representing Sorenson Media as depicted ...

BARCELONA, Spain (February 14, 2011) -- Sorenson Media today announced a new partnership with Kulabyte, an industry leader in live HD and mobile video streaming, to bring the new Squeeze Live cloud encoding platform to market. Currently in beta, the new solution, which was announced today from World Mobile Congress in Barcelona, Spain, enables high-volume live video encoding for distribution to any mobile device or computer.

Squeeze Live's architecture enables the event producer to entirely re-think traditional approaches to live broadcast. With audiences increasingly consuming media on multiple devices at multiple bitrates, adaptive bitrate streaming capability provides a high-quality, reliable, consistent stream, even for challenging bandwidth environments. Preparing multiple renditions previously required additional on-site encoding hardware, bandwidth and infrastructure. Squeeze Live eliminates this wasteful per-event overspending and logistical problem, in favor of a flexible, modular, yet comprehensive high-quality live streaming platform.

Squeeze Live provides the ability to seamlessly connect video-on-demand encoding of live streams, ensuring complete event coverage all within a single cloud platform.

Squeeze Live significantly streamlines and optimizes the previously complex, cumbersome and costly process of encoding video for online delivery for live events--including sporting events, awards ceremonies, conferences, breaking news and exposition presentations. The Squeeze Live solution first passes through a live video stream front-end encoder onsite. The encoded stream is then sent to the cloud for encoding in real time into multiple formats and bitrates, optimized for playback on TV, desktop or laptop computers, or on a broad range of mobile devices, including Blackberry, iPad and iPhone, Android and others. In the final step of this real time process, multiple renditions of each video profile are delivered to the content delivery network (CDN) of choice for streaming.

Primary benefits for Squeeze Live users include:

  • Significantly reduced capital and operating expenditures, including reductions in required equipment, dedicated workforce and other infrastructure.

  • Greatly reduced bandwidth requirements and power consumption--all of the real-time encoding takes place in the cloud, reducing client bandwidth and server requirements and eliminating the need for HVAC equipment/support.

  • Flexible deployment options that eliminate over-purchasing hardware, bandwidth and IT resources; Squeeze Live offers efficient, flexible deployment--all hardware included.

  • Multiple renditions; Multiple bitrate files in the most popular formats, including H.264 and Flash.

  • A highly intuitive single dashboard: Once users indicate how many original streams need to be encoded and the number of formats needed per output, Squeeze Live automatically determines server requirements and fully automates provisioning in the cloud.

Pricing and Availability

Squeeze Live is currently in beta and available immediately. For more information about Squeeze Live, visit sorensonmedia.com/squeeze-live For custom pricing options, contact a member of the Sorenson Media sales team at sales (AT) sorensonmedia.com.

Viaccess Presents Flexible Right Management and Content Discovery to Deploy a Successful Four Screen Content Strategy

PARIS -11th February, 2011 - Viaccess, a France Telecom group company and leader in conditional access and DRM systems and owner of Orca Interactive an innovation leader in IPTV middleware and content discovery and recommendation, provides solutions to protect and enhance the value of content services.

At Mobile World Congress, February 14-17 in Barcelona (Hall 2, stand 2B69) Viaccess presents two key technologies enabling a successful four-screen content strategy, to help operators overcome the multi screen challenges, via a comprehensive rights management and via content discovery applications. Viaccess is focusing on offering solutions for these challenges via a scalable and flexible rights management solution and an intuitive content discovery and recommendation solution, together ensuring a unified and rich user experience across the various video screens. The company will demonstrate FRM (Flexible Right Management) and Compass the recommendation solution by Orca through multi-screen use cases combining TV, smartphones, and tablets.

As viewers' consumption habits evolve, and content is served and consumed on a variety of devices, and via different methods and networks, technology must adapt to handle the variety of content delivery systems, and provide targeted and scalable solutions to protect valuable digital assets. Smart phones, tablets, TV screens and the PC, all serve as viewing devices.
Content is retrieved in many ways; live and on demand, streaming or download, via wired networks or wireless  mobile 3G or WiFi, and in many formats high definition and 3D, and made available in walled garden models or Over The Top, and much more.

Service providers have to deal with the complexity of this landscape and deliver a true multi-device user experience. Right management in this context becomes a business critical issue as per the requirements for an operator controlled user level right management to address all use cases and business models from rental to sell-through for any authorized combination of devices.
In addition, the huge amounts of content available for viewers today from various content sources call for a more intuitive and relevant approach for sorting through content repositories and accessing the most relevant content for the user. Making sure the end-user is presented with the right content on the right device is a key success factor for any service.

Prominent Public Interest Groups Rally Around ivi TV

New York (-February 1, 2011-) Public Knowledge, joined by EFF, Media Access Project, and Open Technology Initiative, have filed an Amicus Memorandum of Law opposing the motion for temporary restraining order and/or preliminary injunction brought against ivi by numerous big media companies in a NY Federal District Court.

Quote attributable to Todd Weaver, ivi TV's CEO

"As the Amicus petitioners state, 'Amicus briefs are unusual at the district court level,' This shows the tremendous impact ivi and its case is having. To garner such early support from these important public interest groups is gratifying. We are appreciative for their support, not only for ivi TV, but for standing up for innovation and advancement in technology. Copyright conglomerates cannot be allowed to use bogus copyright claims as a mechanism to stifle competition and innovation in the marketplace. Like traditional cable and satellite TV before it, ivi TV's role in history is to revolutionize and be an agent of constructive change giving consumers more choice and control."

Select quotes from the Amicus Memorandum say it best.

·         "The law does not favor larger or better-funded entities over new or smaller ones. Nor is it a bludgeon to be used by large, entrenched interests to eliminate nascent competitors."

·         "[The Networks'] are unlikely to prevail on the merits, because ivi's service fits the Copyright Act's definition of a "cable system," and its actions are permissible under FCC rules."

·         "Members of the public both current and future have a strong interest in not only a competitive video distribution marketplace, but also broad access to the marketplace of ideas."

·         "In fact, ivi is just as likely to help [The Networks'] as do them harm. [The Networks'] reach each ivi viewer at zero additional marginal cost. To the extent ivi expands the number of individuals viewing a broadcast, it may make that broadcast more, not less, attractive to advertisers. ivi expands the reach of broadcasters at no cost."

·         "Like ivi, both traditional cable operators and satellite television companies have been accused of being lawbreakers. But for decades, both Congress and the FCC have enabled the emergence of new video distributors. The public interest is served by this competition, and it should continue."

·         "[The Networks'] are unlikely to succeed on the merits of their case, because both the law and sound policy are in ivi's favor."

·         "Current federal policy is enshrined in statute: to "encourage increasing competition and diversity in the multichannel video programming market, ... and to spur the development of communications technologies.""

·         "This Court should not take away the ability of the Copyright Office and the FCC to adapt their regulations to a changing marketplace, and should decline the invitation to use copyright law as a tool to limit the competition that policymakers have strove to foster."

·         "an injunction [in favor of the Networks'] would effectively destroy a company with the potential to revolutionize an entire industry."
